Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

There will be a touch of the Irish in all of us this Sunday, 17 March, as St. Patrick’s Day rolls around once again. Celebrated around the world, St. Patrick’s Day is a religious feast day held on the anniversary of St. Patrick’s death in the 5th century – the patron saint of Ireland. Even though the day falls during Lent, Lenten prohibitions are waived, allowing people to dance, drink and feast for this one special day. So, what better reason to cook up a hearty Irish feast? Invite friends and family round and feast on lamb stew, Dublin coddle, colcannon, cabbage and corned beef, and hearty shepherd’s pie washed down with plenty of Guinness and Irish coffee. Oh, and don’t forget a ‘green’ beer or two – just add a drop of green food colourant to a pint of your favourite brew!

Rum and reggae at Breezes tonight

Breezes by the Bay is hosting a Rum & Reggae night this Friday, from 6pn to 9pm. The event will feature five rum stations and a selection of food options, including artisan pizzas, a BBQ jerk chicken stand and Caribbean-inspired dishes. Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 on the door and include all you can drink rum.

Lauren’s opens in Buckingham Square

Lauren’s is a little gem in the corner of Buckingham Square. Run by Lauren and “Link” Bennett, it is a dream-come-true for this couple that after many years of visiting Grand Cayman, decided that they wanted to make the island their permanent home.

Lauren’s is cozy and welcoming with an all-day breakfast menu featuring some fabulous crepes, and lunch items that run the gamut from hot homemade soups to delicious entrees. Ingredients are fresh, Chef Petar is passionate about his cooking, and so between the two it’s the customer that wins every time.

You’ll also find a nice selection of sandwiches starting with Chef’s fresh house-made bread. These are perfect for those grabbing lunch on the go; and sodas and juices are in bottles or cans, never fountain drinks in cups, so the consistency of quality even extends to the beverages.

Lauren’s is open from 7am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday.

Extraordinary dish of the week

This has to be the Crab Stuffed Portabella Mushroom at Lauren’s in Buckingham Square. The mushroom isn’t stuffed so much as simply flattened by the huge portion of crab you get in this entrée. The crab is absolutely delicious and is beautifully complemented by the mushroom beneath it. Mixed greens and a light drizzle of creamy dressing finish it off perfectly. Make sure to beg them for the mango-papaya salsa that normally accompanies the jerk chicken wrap. Divine darling, divine!

Flava Column – 1 March 2013

Tour Italy with Periwinkle

Periwinkle, at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, is taking diners on a tour of Italy with their Italian dinner series. Periwinkle Chef, Stefano Attardi, is set to share some of his favourite native dishes as he takes guests on four, one week-long explorations of Italy’s different regions noted for their culinary history. The first tour is of Campania and runs through until this Monday. Campania’s exuberant cuisine relies on sun-kissed vegetables, herbs, salty capers, dried pasta and delicious farmhouse cheeses, including mozzarella. The region is also renowned for its fresh seafood and some of the best pizzas in the world. The second tour is of Puglia, from the 25 to the 31 March, followed by Sicilia from 22 to 28 April and ending with a tour of popular dishes from Sardinia, 27 May to 2 June. The four-course dinner is $60 per person, including the option of an additional wine pairing. Call 815-6912 for reservations.

Prime closes its doors

Cayman’s only Brazilian churrascaria, Prime, is now closed. The restaurant, which was located in Governor’s Square, was owned by restaurateurs Markus Meuri and Neil Bryington. Markus said that the space is now under new ownership. The restaurateurs currently own Abacus, KARoo and Deckers.

Illy coffee at Black Trumpet

Coffee shop Black Trumpet is now serving illy coffee as well as the full line of illy coffee machines, available in a variety of sizes and styles, illy coffee is composed of nine distinct highest-order Arabica coffees spanning four continents, purchased directly from the growers who nurtured them. The coffee is expertly blended prior to roasting and cooling, offering a perfectly balanced and delightfully distinct taste and aroma. Velvety, immediately sweet, delicately balancing floral and fruity notes with caramel, toast and chocolate, naturally fragrant with aromas of almond and honey. You just might hold the sugar, for the very first time.

Extraordinary dish(es) of the week

This time I’m going to go with many dishes under one roof. You have GOT to try the lunch at Blue by Eric Ripert in The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman. It is only held on the last Saturday of every month (which means the next one is Saturday, 30 March) and runs from 12pm to 1.30pm. If I was to choose a favourite dish I might go with the fantastic seafood platter, sporting lobster, Alaskan king crab legs, oysters and tuna tartare; but then that means having to choose it above other equally superb choices. You can have the lunch with or without wine pairings. Either way, it’s a fantastic deal. Trust me; make a reservation.

Wok-n-Roll opens

Who doesn't love the healthy alternative of Chinese food?

Who doesn’t love the healthy alternative of Chinese food?

A new Chinese restaurant has opened along West Bay Road. Predominately catering to take-out meals, Wok-n-Roll serves up all the popular favourites you would expect to find on a Chinese restaurant’s menu. There’s a selection of dim sum appetisers, soups, noodle bowls, stir fried noodles and rice dishes, and favourites such as sweet and sour chicken and crispy duck. The restaurant, located in Regency Court, also has a small dine in area, while island-wide delivery is also available. Visit www.woknroll.ky.

George Town Yacht Club

The George Town Yacht Club at The Barcadere is a terrific new venue with a restaurant and bar overlooking the water. It isn’t just the perfect stop for boaters stopping by for a bite to eat; everyone should give this place a try. The food is excellent and excellent value. The prices are really reasonable here and they don’t skimp on the portions. Go as a single, couple or take the kids along on the weekend. Once word really gets out about this club, it’s going to be a very popular hotspot.

Legendz revamp

Legendz has been a staple on the Grand Cayman scene for many years. Since it first opened it has hosted some of the island’s top bands, big Halloween nights, and Super Bowl evenings. If you haven’t been there for a while, however, you may not recognise the place as it went through a major refurbishment at the end of 2012. Legendz is now completely decked out in snazzy red, white and black, featuring a mural of The Rat Pack on the back wall. It’s a fantastic revamp with comfortable booths and television screens strategically placed about the room and behind the bars. The menu is nice and big with lots of choices to suit all tastes. You need to stop by and see the new Legendz.

Blue opens for lunch

Blue by Eric Ripert at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, is now open for lunch. On the last Saturday of each month Blue will open its doors for a lunch service, presenting a three-course a la carte menu with wine pairing for $95, including service charge. The lunch menu features a selection of Blue’s signature dishes alongside new creations courtesy of Chefs Eric Ripert and Luis Lujan. Upcoming lunch dates are 23 February, 30 March, 27 April and 25 May.

Extraordinary Dish of the Week

The conch ceviche at the George Town Yacht Club has got to be tried. The conch is so tender and thin, it just melts in your mouth. You also get a lot of it, so maybe you’ll be willing to give others at the table a bite if you can bear to part with any. This is a delicious dish, and a must for anyone who loves conch.

Extraordinary dish of the week

You really need to head out towards the eastern end of the island to find some dining treasures away from the Seven Mile Strip. Lighthouse is one such gem, with a deck that stretches out over the water and a menu of delights. When you go, you must try the Tuscan sausage appetiser, served on crispy focaccia bread with a mustard mushroom sauce and baby greens. It is earthy yet a touch sweet with a slight kick to it. Absolutely fantastic and something different than your usual appetiser. Highly recommended.

The Cayman Islands World Class Reserve cocktail competition has kicked off, with a host of bartenders from Cayman going shaker to shaker for a spot in the Global Finals. Here they will compete with bartenders from across the globe for the coveted title of Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year. The destination for this year’s Global Finals is still to be determined. Last year it was held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Launched in 2009, the competition aims to transform fine drinking and cocktail culture around the world. What began as a bartending training programme is now an internationally recognised platform that elevates the craft of the bartender and is changing the face of cocktail culture. A series of competitions are being held over the coming months, organised through Jacques Scott, with the Cayman Islands final slated for 1 May.

Extraordinary dish of the week

Rocky’s is a newly opened eatery in Governor’s Square. It is a simple setup with menus above the counter diner-style and burgers enjoying top billing. I didn’t try the burger the day I went, but I did get a milkshake. That day’s flavour was coconut, and when I tell you it was thick, creamy and absolutely delicious, I ain’t telling a lie. This shake reminded me of the “fi’ dolla shake” in Pulp Fiction that sounded so good when John Travolta and Uma Thurman spoke about it, I wanted to run out and find one immediately. Go to Rocky’s and get one of these milkshakes. You’ll be back for more.

Flava out today!

Flava Magazine - Issue 1/2013

Flava Magazine – Issue 1/2013

Cayman’s very own food, drink and all things culinary magazine, Flava, is out today, packed full of recipes, interviews and tips from the food and wine industry professionals. In this edition, we explore some upcoming reason’s to celebrate and get cooking, including Easter and Valentine’s Day. We also chat to local fisherman, to find out what fish are in season, as well as a local gardener for his top tips on growing fruits and vegetables in Cayman. We also explore what dining options there are for vegetarians in Cayman, when FlavaEditor Alan Markoff, takes on the challenge to go meet free. We also have all our usual features as well, including Elementary, where we explore some fabulous wine pairings as well as speak to an industry professional on the rising popularity of Gin. And, for people struggling to keep to their New Year diet resolution’s, check out the Health Conscious section of Flava, where local nutrition consultant Andrea Hill, gives some great tips to help you stay on track and shed those Christmas pounds. And, as always, we have a fabulous competition, this time three nights in a luxurious suite at Half Moon, A RockResort on Jamaica’s northern coast, with flights for two courtesy of Cayman Airways.

Anyone for fish tea?

The Fish Tea Cook-Off finals will be held at Colliers Public Beach, East End this Monday. The competition is scheduled to start at 11am, with judging at 5pm. Held annually on National Heroes’ Day, the competition aims to find the finest fish tea in Cayman. Fish tea is a traditional Caribbean spicy soup, similar to fish bouillion, made using local ingredients, such as red snapper, coconut milk, spices and vegetables such as yam, pumpkin and cassava. Check out the latest edition of Flava for a mouth watering fish tea recipe, or log on to www.flavacayman.com.

Extraordinary dish of the week

Copper Falls Steakhouse is definitely a must-visit for steak lovers, although there are a number of none-beef items on the menu for those who prefer something lighter. My absolute favourite here is the rib eye steak, medium rare, with the divine horseradish cream sauce. The rib eye is so flavourful with all that marbling, and you get a hefty portion for the money. You’d better bring your appetite; otherwise you’ll be taking the rest home in a doggie bag.

Extraordinary dish of the week

Seven Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman has revamped its premises and menu, and as good as it was before, you need to see it now. Of course there are some classics that people love, and one of those is the extraordinary Truffle Mac ‘n’ Cheese. This rich, creamy side dish is so incredibly good that no one would blame you for ordering it sans entrée. When you visit Seven you need to order this. It is soul food like you’ve never tasted before.

There’s a convenient take out booth, which is open from 11am to midnight, while for those wishing to dine in, food is served from 11am to 10pm on the spacious porch at the front of the building.

Extraordinary dish of the week

We chanced upon a sushi roll at Karma Restaurant & Lounge last week (recommended by our new BFF server, Chris) that is absolutely out of this world. The King Karma Roll is like surf and turf in sushi form. It features lobster or king crab in the centre which is then rolled in rice, and finally finished in sashimi Kobe beef. Served with drawn butter, garlic and lemon, rock salt and shoestring potatoes it is simply to die for. Bring your appetite – it’s a rich one.
